Qualche settimana fa Esha Gupta era a Torino. Il 4 aprile 2023 l'attrice ha assistito alla semifinale di andata di Coppa Italia Juventus-Inter all'Allianz Stadium. In quell'occasione ha incontrato Alessandro Del Piero. Esha ha commentato: 'As someone who’s always had a love for football, to experience what I did watching Juventus in action at the Allianz Stadium was beyond doubt something that will stay with me for the rest of my life. It was breathtaking'.

Pramana Asian Film Festival 2023

La seconda edizione del Pramana Asian Film Festival si è svolta a Reggio Calabria dal 5 al 7 aprile 2023. In cartellone Manikbabur Megh (bengali, titolo internazionale The Cloud & the Man) di Abhinandan Banerjee. Gaganachari, pellicola malayalam di fantascienza di Arun Chandu, ha conquistato il premio per il miglior film. 

È morto Pradeep Sarkar

Il regista Pradeep Sarkar è purtroppo deceduto ieri. La sua filmografia (Parineeta, Laaga Chunari Mein Daag, Lafangey Parindey, Mardaani e Helicopter Eela) si contraddistingue per l'ampio spazio concesso ai personaggi femminili, particolarità piuttosto rara nell'ambito del cinema indiano.

Tell it like a woman

Tell it like a woman è un film antologico in lingua inglese di produzione italiana e statunitense. Uno degli episodi è ambientato in India, è diretto da Leena Yadav e interpretato da Jacqueline Fernandez. Lo scorso 7 marzo la pellicola è stata proiettata al Los Angeles-Italia Film Fashion and Art Fest, alla presenza di Jacqueline Fernandez.

È morto Satish Kaushik

L'attore e regista Satish Kaushik è deceduto lo scorso 9 marzo a seguito di un arresto cardiaco. La triste notizia era stata diffusa dall'amico Anupam Kher.

Rashmika Mandanna in Italia: sfilata Onitsuka Tiger

Nei giorni scorsi Rashmika Mandanna era a Milano in occasione della settimana della moda, e ha presenziato alla sfilata di Onitsuka Tiger. L'attrice è rientrata questa mattina in India. Nella fotografia a sinistra, Rashmika è ritratta in compagnia dell'attore sudcoreano Jung Il Woo, dell'attore thailandese Kanawut Traipipattanapong e del cantante giapponese Genki Iwahashi.

Love Again in Italia

Shah Rukh Khan: two decades of pure feeling

Vi segnalo l'articolo Shah Rukh Khan: two decades of pure feeling, di Rahul Desai, pubblicato ieri da Film Companion:

'There's a meta moment towards the end of the trailer [di Pathaan] that made me sit up. (...) It features Khan (...) delivering a patriotic punchline. (...) It's not like Khan hasn't played a soldier (...) or a flag-waving patriot (...) before. But those were simpler times - the notion of a Hindi film star was shaped more by artistic merit than religious identity. Nationalism was an honest byproduct of a post-liberalization democracy; nobody cared for surnames as long as the entertainment came. (...)

It's different today. This is now a country conscious of the fact that three of its biggest superstars since 1990 are Muslim. In light of the bigoted Boycott hashtags over the last few years, I found myself pondering about this Jai Hind moment in two ways. One: SRK is currently in the real-world version of Chak De! India, where he is expected to 'prove' his allegiance to this country through the work he does. Two: Khan is returning in a movie called 'Pathaan' in a Republic Day week, as a Muslim super-soldier whose very presence signifies that patriotism and heroism are not solely Hindu birthrights. Perspective lies in the eyes of the beholder. So is it a punchline of compromise or courage. 

I'm leaning towards the latter. It's sad that the discourse has reached this point, but it would be naive to pretend that SRK is just another celebrity. He is now a feeling - pure, complicated, political, personal, cultural - that transcends cinema itself. He is both a story and a statement, a survivor and a reminder. He is an outsider scrutinized for behaving like an insider, and an insider gifted with the hunger of an outsider. This burden of context might colour our experience of Pathaan. Now more than ever, it's impossible to divorce the man from the meaning. And maybe that's not such a bad thing. For better or worse, the fate of Pathaan will say more about this country than the quality of the film itself. (...)

The nerveless nineties (1991-2000) (...)

It was SRK who embedded himself into the conscience of a country waking up to post-globalization Bollywood. (...) SRK became a genre-fluid brand in an age of aspiration. What distinguished him the most was that he wasn't averse to risk. (...) The beauty of this phase is that Khan was, for a large part, unaffected by the frills of stardom. He was still feeling his way around, throwing characters onto the wall to see what sticks. (...) Not everything worked, and it didn't matter. (...)

The wonder years (2001-2010) (...)

Initially, this golden age seemed to liberate SRK from the pressure of 'ruling' the roost. So he wore multiple hats (some of which had rabbits in them) - producer, talk-show host, charming interviewee, awards host, IPL owner, showman, businessman, cameo specialist, actor and prestige-picture star. His on-screen roles became older and wiser: King, tragic, scientist, ghost, coach, husband, bitter husband, older husband, Bollywood star, father. The romances became less aspirational and more practical. Believe it or not, this was a near-perfect decade for Khan in terms of consolidating his talent, tempering his fame and playing his age. (...)

The dark night (2011-2020)

The decline was neither quick nor painless. This was the decade that broke everything except box-office records. Terms like the 100-crore club were in vogue, and it felt like SRK wanted a piece of every cake. As a result, he strived to be everyone but himself - a multiplex hero, a single-screen hero, a hero's hero. (...) It's not like he didn't try. But he also tried too hard. (...) Somehow, every kind of filmmaker (...) made their worst film with Khan'.

Naatu Naatu, All That Breathes e The Elephant Whisperers in corsa per gli Oscar

Questo pomeriggio sono stati resi noti i candidati definitivi per il premio Oscar. Chhello Show purtroppo è fuori dai giochi, ma l'India può comunque celebrare: la canzone Naatu Naatu (tratta dalla colonna sonora del film telugu RRR), l'acclamato documentario All That Breathes (già vincitore del World Documentary Grand Jury Prize al Sundance Film Festival 2022 e dell’Œil d’or al Festival di Cannes 2022), e il cortometraggio documentario tamil The Elephant Whisperers (diretto dalla regista Kartiki Gonsalves e prodotto da Guneet Monga) sono entrati nella cinquina nelle rispettive categorie. Vi ricordo che The Elephant Whisperers è stato distribuito da Netflix a partire dallo scorso 8 dicembre. Il titolo dell'edizione italiana è Raghu, il piccolo elefante. Trailer.

Festa del Cinema di Roma 2022

La 17esima edizione della Festa del Cinema di Roma si svolgerà dal 13 al 23 ottobre 2022. Vi segnalo, fuori concorso, il premiatissimo documentario All that breathes di Shaunak Sen. In cartellone anche What's love got to do with it?, film britannico diretto da Shekhar Kapur e interpretato, fra gli altri, da Shabana Azmi.

Aggiornamento del 22 ottobre 2022: What's love got to do with it? si è aggiudicato il premio Ugo Tognazzi per la miglior commedia, e verrà distribuito in Italia a partire dal 16 marzo 2023 - grazie a Lucky Red - col titolo What's love?. International Police Award Arts Festival 2022

La 26esima edizione dell'International Police Award Arts Festival si svolge a Pesaro dal 9 al 18 settembre 2022. Il 16 settembre, alle ore 20.30, presso il Cinema Teatro Sperimentale, verrà presentato il trailer di Delhi Crime, alla presenza di Shefali Shah e del regista Richie Mehta. 

Aggiornamento del 19 settembre 2022: a Shefali Shah e a Richie Mehta (insieme ad altri, fra cui Sergio Rubini) è stato conferito il Premio Internazionale Apoxiomeno per la televisione. Inoltre a Shefali è stato assegnato l'Alberto Sordi Family Award per la sezione cinema. L'attrice ha condiviso numerose fotografie a testimonianza del suo soggiorno in Italia.
